Blogs vs. Wiki

Blogs and Wikis are both mediums used to share information. By definition, a blog is a "regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style". A wiki is "a website that allows collaborative editing of its content and structure by its users". One can figure out these 2 terms' definitions by just googling and at first glance, both seem identical. There are nuances that differentiate them however.

Blogs are tools of self expression. It has more of a personal connotation: "This is your blog". It's where a person shares their stories, their opinions and of course news. Because blogs carry such individualism to themselves, they have become tools of self-expression and influences. As detailed in "Wal-Mart Tastemakers Write Unfiltered Blog", Michael Barbaro of the New York Times wrote of how blogs have the power to influence the viewpoints of Walmart's customers on certain products. The blogs' ability to sway opinions became so prevalent that Walmart started to encourage merchants to speak their minds about its products.

Wikis, while also being informational tools, inherently operate in a different way from blogs. They are tools of contribution and collaboration. It allows users to work together and contribute information about a certain topic. According to Information Week's "How to Use Wikis for a Business", Erza Goodnoe talked about how Wikis are low-cost but highly efficient ways to elevate businesses' marketing. By using wikis, businesses can publish information about themselves in an accessible platform for all users to find out.
